How to play Four in a Row
- The board: 7 columns, 6 rows. On your turn you drop one disc into a column and it falls to the lowest empty space in that column. A full column takes no more discs.
- Winning: be first to line up four of your discs — horizontally across, vertically up a column, or on either diagonal. The winning four light up with a line through them. If all 42 spaces fill with no four, the round is a draw.
- On a computer: move the mouse over a column — a see-through disc shows exactly where your disc will land — then click to drop it.
- On a phone: tap a column once to aim: the disc appears above the column and its landing spot glows. Tap the big Drop button (or tap the same column again) to drop it. Tapping a different column just moves your aim — nothing drops by accident.
- Discs: Player 1 is red, Player 2 is yellow — and every disc is also printed with its number, 1 or 2, so colour is never the only way to tell them apart.
- Quick match: a single round — win the round and you win the match. This is the standard rulebook.
- Classic match: first to win 3 rounds takes the match. The loser of each round starts the next one; after a draw, the player who did not start the drawn round starts next — nobody moves first every time.
- Pass & play: two players share this device. Hands are public in this game, so there is nothing to hide — a "Pass to Player 1 / 2" screen appears between turns so the device changes hands cleanly.
- Bot difficulty (vs Bot only): Easy — the bot thinks a step ahead and sometimes wanders, good while you learn. Normal — thinks several moves ahead and always blocks your winning drop. Hard — thinks deep, hunts the centre, and builds double threats that are hard to stop. Your pick stays for the next game too.
- Voice: round results are called out loud — "Four in a row!" and who took the round or the match. Turn it off any time with the Voice toggle; voice also goes quiet whenever the site sound is muted.
